Screening and Testing for Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C often has no symptoms. Getting screened and tested is the only way to know if you have hepatitis C.
Testing for Hepatitis C
The CDC recommends hepatitis C testing for all adults, pregnant women, and anyone who may have recently been exposed. If you've been diagnosed with hepatitis C, contact your doctor to begin treatment right away. Learn more about hepatitis C testing here.
- Getting tested for hepatitis C is the only way to find out if you have HCV infection.
- You should get tested for hepatitis C at least once in your life.
- Some people may need periodic testing.
- If you find out you have hepatitis C, your doctor can give you lifesaving treatment.
Why Get Tested for Hepatitis C?
Getting tested for hepatitis C is essential, especially if you think you’ve been exposed to the virus. Early diagnosis allows your doctor to begin treatment right away, helping to prevent serious health complications.
If left untreated, chronic hepatitis C can lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death.
Because many people with hepatitis C have no symptoms, testing is the only way to know for sure if you are infected.
