Residents can get rid of hazardous waste

Eight of the county’s cities and the Galveston County Health District have teamed up for a countywide household hazardous waste and e-waste disposal day Saturday. The event is aimed at helping residents to get rid of waste that is too toxic to put into the trash.

Whether it is old cans of brake fluid, a refrigerator that stopped working years ago, old tires or even old computer equipment or TV sets, you can unload the waste from your garage, storage shed and from under your sink and know that it will be disposed or properly and at no cost.

There’s even an industrial shredder on site to get rid of your old utility bills or other sensitive paper work so you don’t have to worry about identity theft when you dump bills or credit card statements.

The household hazardous waste and e-waste disposal event is Saturday in the parking lot of Gulf Greyhound Park. While the cities of League City, Dickinson, La Marque, Hitchcock, Santa Fe, Texas City and Clear Lake Shores are part of the effort, all Galveston County residents can dispose of their waste just as long as it is from a household and not a business.

Dickinson Mayor Julie Masters and the Keep Dickinson Beautiful organization worked with the Houston Galveston Area Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to get a grant that is funding the countywide effort. In the past, cities would hold their own household hazardous waste disposal events.

The disposal is meant to rid your house of hazardous materials and not general trash.
