National Nutrition Month Observed
-
Press
Release
March 1,
2010
Galveston
County and Cities – The
Galveston County Health District’s WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program
will be observing National Nutrition Month by hosting a Nutrition Fair at Mall
of the Mainland, Wednesday, March 3rd from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
The theme for
this year’s observation is “Nutrition from the Ground Up.” The fair will be a
time when parents, professionals, educators and various vendors will come
together to promote the importance of healthy food choices and physical
activity.
Some of the
confirmed participants include; HEB, D’Lite Full Fit Foods, Agrilife Extension
Service, Houston Food Bank and McDonald’s. Others participating represent a
variety of health and fitness programs; GCHD Immunizations, COM-Wellness
Program, Mall Walkers, Breast Feeding Peer Counselor Program and Community
Health Choice.
Event
organizers have worked to make sure there will be activities that will help
promote nutrition for all ages. Information will include; “Ask the Chef”
cooking healthier meals, organic vs. non-organic, physical fitness for children,
cooking demonstrations, information on how to read nutritional labels, fast food
low calorie menus and health screenings.
Community
Health Nurses from the Health District will also be on hand giving H1N1
vaccinations. While flu activity in the county is currently low officials
stress the importance of receiving the H1N1 vaccination for those that have not
already done so.
Most people
realize that a healthful diet is an important part of a healthful lifestyle, but
many people have trouble figuring out what to do when planning a complete diet
overhaul. The nutrition fair organizers encourage everyone to attend and learn
some of the easy ways to focus on eating better so everyone can build
nutritional health from the ground up.
