Does County Have A Health District Or Not?
Letter to the Editor

Published February 26,

I’m really
confused after reading Leigh Jones’ article “City might end EMS
contract with health district” (The Daily News, Feb. 16), about a
contract with Galveston Health District for ambulance service.
I thought
Galveston didn’t have a health district. What has been all the
blabber in the paper about creating one?
If we have a
health district — who is it? Where is it? What is “it” doing for the
residents of Galveston? How is it working to provide continuing
health care? What powers does it have with the University of Texas
regents?
Please point the
residents of Galveston to whoever we need to contact with this
“Galveston Health District.” I want to talk to them. I’m sure other
residents do, too.
I moved to
Galveston in 2002 because I am within 10 years of retirement and I
wanted a lovely place to retire and to be close to health
facilities. In the past four months, I first did without; then I was
forced to drive more than 20 miles one way just to see my health
care provider, who used to be just blocks away.
We need to know
this: If we have a health district, what is it doing for us? If
there’s a contract with it, that must mean it exists!
