The Galveston County Health District will continue
administering swine flu vaccinations to Galveston County residents in
high-risk categories.
The free vaccinations will be provided, while supplies
last, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 at
1207 Oak St. in La Marque.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
recommends vaccinations for these groups: pregnant women; household contacts
and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age; health care and
emergency medical services personnel; all people 6 months through 24 years
old; people ages 25 to 64 who have health conditions associated with higher
risk of medical complications from influenza disease (lung disease, heart
disease, asthma, etc.).
Individuals who are not in one of these categories
should not expect to be vaccinated until the vaccine becomes more widely
available. Once the priority groups have been immunized, it is likely there
will be enough vaccine available for all who wish to receive it, health
officials said.
District officials encourage everyone to stay informed
and practice good hygiene habits to reduce the spread of H1N1 and seasonal
flu. Recommended actions include covering the mouth and nose with a tissue
or sleeve when coughing and sneezing, and washing the hands frequently.
If soap and water are not available, a hand sanitizer
that is at least 60 percent alcohol should be used.
