Not
too Late for Flu Shot!
Press release
November 14, 2006
With the influenza virus having been confirmed to be circulating in
the Houston area, officials with the Galveston County Health District are reminding
people that the best way to prevent illness is by receiving
a flu shot. Health Authority Dr. Mark Guidry says,
“Laboratory tests have confirmed that the flu virus is
circulating in our area of Texas. It is not too late to get
a flu shot, but remember that it takes up to two weeks for
the shot to become effective.”
Anyone can receive a flu shot who wants to reduce the likelihood of
becoming infected. Due to the risk of serious consequences,
high risk groups are strongly advised to receive flu shots
every year. High risk groups include children 6 months to 5
years old; pregnant women; people 50 or older; anyone with a
chronic medical condition such as asthma or diabetes; and
people who live in nursing homes and other long term care
facilities. It is also recommended for health care workers
and people who live with anyone in those risk groups.
Flu shots are available in a variety of locations. This season, the
Health District has received supplies in smaller increments
on a nearly weekly basis and expects a total of about 6000
doses available to the public.
Galveston County residents may obtain a flu shot at any of
the following locations on a first come first serve basis,
while vaccine supplies last.
