Have you felt a tickle in your throat recently? Do you know someone who’s been
complaining of a sore throat?
Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, but it’s a good warning that the flu season
is upon us again.
The Galveston County Health District has already begun its annual
immunization process and held clinics especially for the provision of flu shots.
Many people shrug off the idea of a jab to prevent flu, reasoning that an
attack is usually over in three or so days.
A head cold, even a severe one, lasting three or so days is not flu.
Influenza is far more potent and lasts far longer. The County Health District
warns that it involves fever and can lead to pneumonia.
It says all such misery can be avoided with an annual flu shot and recommends
that those at high risk take particular care to ensure they receive a shot each
year.
The district recommends vaccination for children 6 months to 5 years old;
pregnant women; people 50 or older; anyone with a chronic medical condition such
as asthma or diabetes; and people who live in nursing homes and other long-term
care facilities.
It also recommends an annual shot for health-care workers and people who live
with anyone in these higher-risk groups.
For people with Medicare Part B insurance, the shots are available at no
cost. For everyone else, vaccination costs $20 and a pneumonia vaccination $30.
Isn’t that a worthwhile price to pay for something that could, quite
literally, save your life?
