La Marque –
Officials with the Galveston County Health District are examining
ways to continue improving environmental services activities conducted by the
District in a process that began with a summit first held in 2004. As part of
this ongoing effort the third annual Environmental Summit will be held on
October 19th at the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce offices
located at 9702 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway in Texas City. The summit will be
held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Water quality issues will be the primary focus of this year’s summit.
Participants will be examining these issues and attempting to identify solutions
and resources to address areas of concern. Those expected to attend the summit
include County and City elected officials, members of the Galveston County
United Board of Health and local individuals interested in environmental
services provided in Galveston County. There will be opportunities to
brainstorm ideas, establish collaborations, and create an action plan for the
future.
“We work very hard at all
times to improve our services provided in the county,” says Ronnie Schultz,
Director of Environmental Programs. “By seeking input from community leaders
and other people dedicated to improving the environment we can continue to
improve the services our dedicated staff members provide to the residents of
Galveston County.” District officials hope that
continued community input will allow staff to meet some of the goals that have
been established since the adoption of a Strategic Health Plan in 2004.
Some of the goals that have been addressed include: development of a “work plan”
to reduce air pollution; seeking a state permit granting Storm Water Plan
approval and developing and testing ways to improve communications and
collaborations with city counterparts during routine and emergency situations.
The Health District’s
Strategic Health Plan is designed to make measurable improvements in the
health of Galveston County. Dr. Mark Guidry, Health District CEO and County
Health Authority says, “We continually welcome and enjoy the opportunities that
our summits give us to garner input from community leaders. We have made great
progress in addressing the health needs of Galveston County but we recognize
there are still improvements to be made.” For more information on Health District programs and activities visit:
