Health District Presents Best Practices at National Conference

Press Release
08/08/006

La Marque - The Galveston County Health District’s efforts to engage the community in public health matters were highlighted at the National Association of Local Boards of Health Conference recently held in San Antonio.

Representing the District was Mary Anne Holcomb, Secretary and Treasurer of the Galveston County United Board of Health.  Ms. Holcomb also serves on the Kemah city council.  The District’s Public Health Planner, Brian Rutherford assisted in the presentation primarily prepared by Dr. Mark Guidry, CEO.

The conference focused on best practices from health departments around the United States.  The presentation given by the Galveston County Health District described the strategies district leaders have used to get input and feedback from various stakeholders and the general public through advisory committees, public summits, and collaborations with partners.  The presenters showed how other health departments can use this feedback to improve the effectiveness and support of public health programs.

" I am excited as a member of the United Board of Health to share this information with other public health leaders working towards healthier communities,” says Holcomb.  “Health District staffs, employees, board members and the community have assisted greatly in our efforts to make the district responsive to community needs.”

The presentation was well received by those in attendance and many offered comments that it would be very beneficial for other health districts and departments to include in their planning processes.
