Third Public Summit to Further Improve Animal Services

Press Release
July 13, 2006

La Marque - Officials with the Galveston County Health District are examining ways to continue improving animal services activities conducted by the District a process that began with the first summit held in 2004.  As part of this effort the third annual Animal Services Summit will be held July 21st at the Wayne Johnson Community Center (Carbide Park), 4102 Main Street, La Marque, in the community room.  The Summit will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Those expected to attend the Summit include County and City elected officials, members of the Galveston County United Board of Health, members of the Galveston County Animal Services Advisory Committee, and local individuals interested in animal services provided in Galveston County.

The Health District has implemented many improvements in Animal Service operations since the first summit.  Some of the improvements involve management and staffing, a new interlocal agreement with participating local governments, a new advisory committee, shelter operations, an agreement for low cost spay and neutering for animals adopted from the shelter, and better coordination with local volunteer and animal rescue groups. Officials anticipate continued future improvements. “We have been working very hard to improve the services we provide to the community and have implemented many positive changes,” says Ronnie Schultz, Director of Environmental Health Programs. “With input from community leaders and those people dedicated to the care of animals we are sure that we can continue to improve services and offer an even higher quality program in the future.”

The purpose of the Summit is to outline the Health District’s ongoing plans to improve existing services within available resources, and to hear community ideas and perspectives regarding the need for short-term or long-term improvements in animal services. Focus issues for this year’s summit include animal fostering, grant opportunities, marketing and education for the public, and animal care during disasters.

The Health District works under a seven year “Strategic Health Plan” adopted in 2004 that is designed to make measurable improvements in the health of Galveston County.  Dr. Guidry, Health District CEO says, “The 2005 Progress Report to the United Board of Health revealed that the shelter took in 2000 more animals compared to 2004.  Also, a greater proportion of those animals are being adopted and rescued, while a smaller number are being euthanized.  We are proud of the progress made, and we recognize we have more to do.”
