The Galveston County Health District is planning a summit May 25 to discuss ways
of improving the district’s animal services. District officials said improvements have been made since the first animal
summit in March 2004 and they would like to see that trend continue. “We have been working very hard to improve the services we provide to the
community and have implemented many positive changes,” said Ronnie Schultz,
director of environmental health programs. “With input from community leaders
and those people dedicated to the care of animals, we are sure that we can
continue to improve services and offer an even higher quality program in the
future.” At the summit, officials will outline the district’s plans to improve services
within available resources. They will also hear ideas from the public on the
need for improvements in animal services.
The health district works under a seven-year Strategic Health Plan. The plan,
adopted in 2004, is designed to make measurable improvements in the health of
Galveston County.
Priority six of the plan calls for improvements in environmental health. The
animal services program is managed by the district’s Environmental Programs
Department.
hose expected to attend the summit include county and city elected officials,
members of the Galveston County United Board of Health, members of the Galveston
County Animal Shelter Advisory Committee and individuals interested in animal
services.
