Health District Co-Sponsors Conference

La Marque -The
Galveston County Health District and the Texas Public Health
Association are co-sponsoring a conference at the Tremont
House Hotel on Wednesday, January 19th – 21st.
The theme of the conference is, “Public
Health, Making it Visible.” To date nearly 200 participants,
mostly public health workers across the state, have registered
to attend and discuss important public health topics. Topics
include; the Health District’s strategic planning process,
emerging diseases such as Community Acquired MRSA, the local
BeachWatch program, food safety concerns, UTMB’s BioSafety
lab, and planning for public health emergencies and epidemics.
A separate course will be taught throughout the conference
on Basic Disaster Life Support techniques.
Speakers include many local officials and subject
matter experts. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Ben
Raimer, Vice President of the Galveston County United Board
of Health. Guest speaker Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Texas Commissioner
of State Health Services will discuss building collaborations
in public health.
Concluding the conference there will be a luncheon
panel of Galveston County Health District board members sharing
their perspectives on public health issues.
Kurt Koopmann, Public Information Officer says,
“Having this conference in Galveston will facilitate
networking and information sharing among public health workers
across the state. It is also designed to train public health
workers on the important public health issues of the day.”
