HEALTH ADVISORY
“No Swimming”
advisory
Press Release
June 25, 2004
La Marque -The
Galveston County Health District posted a “No Swimming”
advisory along several beaches on Galveston Island and Bolivar
Peninsula on Friday due to elevated bacteria levels as part
of their continuing monitoring efforts under the Texas Beach
Watch program. Bacteria levels at the following locations
tested above the state standard:
- Eight Mile Road on Galveston’s west end
- Appfel Park on Galveston’s east end
- Various locations from the Ferry Landing to Rollover
Pass on the Bolivar Peninsula
Whenever high levels of bacteria are detected
swimming is not advisable until the levels return to normal.
Wet weather events producing several inches of rain typically
increase bacteria levels in area waterways due to contaminated
storm water runoff. Once high bacterial levels are detected
beach waters will be tested daily until bacterial levels
return to normal. At that time the public will be notified
that the “No Swimming” advisory has been lifted.
“These monitoring activities
are conducted to protect the public from waterborne illnesses
that may be acquired from swimming in waters with high bacteria
levels,” says Ronnie Schultz, Director of Environmental
Health Programs at the District.
