The Galveston County Health District will be conducting several events this week as part of National Public Health Week.

On Wednesday the District will be presenting the annual “Gold Ribbon” awards to area food service establishments. These are the local eateries that receive the best marks from inspectors throughout the year.

“Our Gold Ribbon awards recognize those local food establishments that make special efforts to maintain high sanitation levels in their facilities,” Martin Entringer, the district’s Consumer Health Manager said. “We are proud to present these awards to some very conscientious establishments.”

Among the winners are the cafeterias of Dickinson school district. Bay Colony, Hughes Road, K.E. Little, Hughes Road schools along with McAdams Junior High and Silbernagel Elementary will all be recognized.

The ceremony which will be held at the Wayne Johnson Community Center in Carbide Park at 7 p.m.

Health week activities will also be a part of the Employee Health Fair to earlier in the day at Texas City’s Nessler Center.

The District-wide Fair is designed to promote inter-local collaboration and the importance of healthy living.

The event will feature health screenings, demonstrations, health information sharing and speakers on a variety of health topics.

Many of the various health entities within the county will serve as exhibitors. Employees from the 13 member cities that make up the district and Galveston County employees are invited to attend the fair.

“We welcome this annual opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of public health employees and community partners,” said district head Mark Guidry. “Our strategic health plan recognizes the value of collaborative work among city and county workers as well as with community partners and volunteers.

“Such collaborations will help to make needed health improvements in the Health District.”
