Health top issue of week

The Galveston County Health
District will be conducting several events this week as
part of National Public Health Week.
On Wednesday the District will
be presenting the annual “Gold Ribbon” awards
to area food service establishments. These are the local
eateries that receive the best marks from inspectors throughout
the year.
“Our Gold Ribbon awards
recognize those local food establishments that make special
efforts to maintain high sanitation levels in their facilities,”
Martin Entringer, the district’s Consumer Health Manager
said. “We are proud to present these awards to some
very conscientious establishments.”
Among the winners are the cafeterias
of Dickinson school district. Bay Colony, Hughes Road, K.E.
Little, Hughes Road schools along with McAdams Junior High
and Silbernagel Elementary will all be recognized.
The ceremony which will be held
at the Wayne Johnson Community Center in Carbide Park at
7 p.m.
Health week activities will
also be a part of the Employee Health Fair to earlier in
the day at Texas City’s Nessler Center.
The District-wide Fair is designed
to promote inter-local collaboration and the importance
of healthy living.
The event will feature health
screenings, demonstrations, health information sharing and
speakers on a variety of health topics.
Many of the various health entities
within the county will serve as exhibitors. Employees from
the 13 member cities that make up the district and Galveston
County employees are invited to attend the fair.
“We welcome this annual
opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of
public health employees and community partners,” said
district head Mark Guidry. “Our strategic health plan
recognizes the value of collaborative work among city and
county workers as well as with community partners and volunteers.
“Such collaborations
will help to make needed health improvements in the Health
District.”
