| Animal Summit
Should Lead To Positive Change
The Galveston Daily News

Thank you, Dr. Mark Guidry, Health
District staff, and elected officials who attended the first
animal summit on March 30.
Also thank you to all of the interested people
who spent three lively hours offering suggestions for improvements
to the existing animal services.
Note, the first big step was to call it Animal
Services, not Animal Control.
The room was filled with volunteers who are
already spending thousands of hours and thousands of dollars
to help the county’s animals. When members of this group
combine their energy with the existing staff, I believe positive
changes will happen.
Good luck to Ronnie Schultz, into whose capable
hands this task has fallen. Without the enormous efforts of
Joe Vickery, who brought us out of the dark ages, we would
have no animal shelter.
A big thank you to him, and a hope that now
we can carry on his vision for humane and professional care
of animals.
Everyone in the room, I am sure, longs for
the day when people will understand that pet ownership requires
responsibility and that spaying-neutering is as important
as feeding and watering.
