National Public Health Week

La Marque - The
Galveston County Health District will be conducting several
events for National Public Health Week being observed April
5 -11, 2004. This annual observance provides a great opportunity
to recognize the importance of public health and its partners
in our community.
Wednesday April 7, 2004 the District will be presenting the annual “Gold
Ribbon” awards to area food service establishments. Martin Entringer, Consumer
Health Manager at the District explains, “Our Gold Ribbon awards recognize those
local food establishments that make special efforts to maintain high sanitation
levels in their facilities. We are proud to present these awards to some very
conscientious establishments.”
The public is invited to attend the ceremony which will be held at the Wayne
Johnson Community Center located in Carbide Park, 4102 FM 519, La Marque
beginning at 7 pm. Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough will be present with
opening remarks along with Mark Guidry, M.D., MPH, Chief Executive Officer and
Health Authority for the District.

be receiving Gold Ribbon awards:

For several years the District has held an
Employee Health Fair in the spring. This year is was
decided to hold the Fair during National Public Health Week. This District-wide
Fair is designed to promote inter-local collaboration and the importance of
healthy living. The Health Fair will feature health screenings, demonstrations,
health information sharing, speakers on a variety of health topics, and much
more! Many different health entities within the county will serve as exhibitors.
Employees from the thirteen member cities that make up the District and
Galveston County employees are invited to attend the Fair.
The Health Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 7 from 1:00 p.m. until 4
p.m. in the Captains and Wings of Freedom rooms of the Nessler Center, at 2010
Fifth Avenue North in Texas City.
“We welcome this annual opportunity
to recognize the outstanding contributions of public health
employees and community partners,” says Mark Guidry,
MD, MPH, Health Authority for the Galveston County Health
District. “Our strategic health plan recognizes the
value of collaborative work among city and county workers
as well as with community partners and volunteers. Such collaborations
will help to make needed health improvements in the Health
