| Animal Summit Today
The Galveston Daily News

Published 03/30/04Here’s one of the bitterest of ironies about life in Galveston County: Each
year, people who love animals have to kill them routinely.
Abandoned animals that
cannot be adopted are given lethal injections. These deaths are humane. But they
also are, to a great extent, preventable. It’s a heart-wrenching problem that
the public has known about for years.
Today, the Galveston County Health District is doing
something about it. It has asked city
and county officials to meet with members of the Galveston
County United Board of Health and the Galveston County Animal
Shelter Advisory Committee to discuss the problem and
suggestions on solving it. It’s also asked representatives of
animal-welfare groups and nonprofit shelters, as well as
interested private citizens, to offer suggestions.
If you have a suggestion, you’re invited to the Animal
Summit. It’s at 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today at the Wayne Johnson
Community Center, 4102 Main St., La Marque. The summit won’t
solve all the county’s problems with animals. But it’s a good
first step. We’re glad the health district is taking it.
