Published 04/01/04La Marque— Health
District officials are reviewing and prioritizing ideas offered
by animal advocates during a recent meeting, but do much about
the huge problem of strays. Changing the design of an animal
shelter and increasing the number of volunteers were some
of the ideas discussed Tuesday at an animal summit sponsored
by the Galveston County Health District. The summit was to outline the
district’s plans to improve animal control services
within available resources, and hear ideas and for improvements
in those services.
“This was about information
sharing,” said Kurt Koopman, health district spokesman.
“It was a first step.”
Wydell Dixon, founder of the Whiskerville Animal Sanctuary
in Texas City, said she was encouraged by the summit, but
worried that little would be done. “Some wonderful ideas
came out of it, but the problem is there just isn’t
any money,” she said.
