Under
the medical protocols
of the EMS Medical Director and the direct supervision of a Senior Emergency Medical Technician, performs
responsible and technical medical work dealing with emergency or non-emergency
and/or lifesaving treatment of patients who are transported via Mobile
Intensive Care Unit ambulance from the scene of an accident, home or other
location to an emergency treatment facility.
May function as the Senior Technician on non-emergency transfers.

Functions
70%
- Analyzes on arrival at the scene, the total situation in which the patient is
involved; provides for patient’s safety and attends to life threatening
emergency conditions before and after the patient is extricated and moved to
the ambulance; assists law enforcement officers and other persons in
maintaining control of the scene and bystanders; transmits information via
radio to emergency or non-emergency treatment facility regarding patient’s
illness or injuries, vital signs and other pertinent data; prepares the patient
for transport to the nearest appropriate emergency medical facility; provides
continuing care and treatment of the patient while enroute to the emergency
medical facility and reports any changes in the patient’s condition to the
appropriate person(s) at that facility; requests professional advice and/or
treatment orders needed to administer to the patient in the effort to stabilize
their injuries and maintain their well being; minimizes disturbing the patient
when driving so as to provide maximum comfort and to avoid aggravating the
patient’s injuries

- Maintains the vehicle, supplies, and communications equipment in a state of
operational readiness, including, but not limited to, cleanliness,
functionality, attempting minor repairs and reporting major problems and/or
deficiencies; maintains adequate, legible records and reports

duties as assigned and/or required. May
supervise the work and/or training of students.
Knowledge
of the layout of city streets and the use of map books for navigation to
emergency and non-emergency calls; medical terminology, practices, and
procedures and applications of first aid; use, maintenance, security, and
inventory of drugs, supplies, equipment and medical records; ambulance
operations, vehicles, use and maintenance of all required emergency medical
supplies and equipment; local and state requirements pertaining to operation of
ambulances and rescue vehicles.
Skill
in providing emergency medical services; customer service and support;
organizing and prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines; and excellent
written and verbal communication.
Ability

High School diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an approved
Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate course.
Preference
will be given to previous work experience as an Emergency Medical Technician
-Intermediate.
Current CPR
Valid
Current Certification from the Texas Department
of State Health Services as an Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate
Successful
completion of pre-employment written exam, physical agility test, physical, and
drug screening.
Physical
activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching,
crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering,
grasping, feeling, talking hearing and repetitive motions. Physical demands
include very heavy work while exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force
occasionally; constantly to move objects; Visual requirements include clarity
of vision at twenty (20) feet or more, twenty (20) inches or less, and at
distances of more than twenty (20) inches and less than twenty (20) feet;
Ability to judge distance and space relationship, so as to see objects where
and as they actually are; Ability to frequently work under varying noise
levels, temperature extremes, mechanical hazards or equipment hazards, exposure
to dangerous chemicals/solvents/fumes/radiation, exposure to burns or exposure
to electrical shock, and significant work pace/pressure during calls to injured
patients. Ability to identify and distinguish colors; Ability to observe an
area up or down or left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
