Under the medical protocols of the EMS Medical Director and the direct supervision of a Senior
Emergency Medical Technician, the EMT is responsible for performing responsible
and technical medical work dealing with non-emergency treatment of patients who
are transported via ambulance from the scene of an accident, home or other
location to an emergency or non-emergency treatment facility.
Occasionally may be required to perform medical care in an emergency situation
as part of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit crew. Work is usually performed
independently under remote supervision of a licensed physician and requires
independent critical judgment.
70% - Analyzes patient situation and makes
appropriate triage decisions and calls for additional resources as required;
provides for patient’s safety and attends to emergency or non-emergency
conditions before and after patient is moved to the ambulance; provides for and
maintains patient comfort; assists law enforcement officers and other persons
in maintaining the scene and bystanders; assists qualified personnel in
extricating the patient(s); transmits information via radio to emergency or
non-emergency treatment facility regarding patient’s illness or injuries, vital
signs and other pertinent data; requests professional advice and/or treatment
orders needed to administer to the patient in the effort to stabilize their
injuries and maintain their well being; operates under standing orders and/or
treatment protocols in critical situations, as written and authorized by the
Medical Director. Provides continuing care, comfort and treatment of the
patient while in route to a facility and reports any changes in a patient’s
condition to the appropriate person(s).
20% - Maintains the vehicle, supplies, and communications
equipment in a state of operational readiness, including, but not limited to,
cleanliness, functionality, attempting minor repairs and reporting major
problems and/or deficiencies; maintains adequate, legible records and reports.
10% - Performs other related duties as assigned
and/or required. May supervise the work and/or training of students.
Knowledge of the layout of the city streets and
the use of map books for navigation to emergency and non-emergency calls;
medical terminology, practices, and procedures and applications of first aid;
use, maintenance, security, and inventory of drugs, supplies, equipment and
medical records; ambulance operations, vehicles, use and maintenance of all
required emergency medical supplies and equipment; local and state requirements
pertaining to operation of ambulances and rescue vehicles.
Skill in providing emergency medical services;
customer service and support; organizing and prioritizing workload and meeting
deadlines; and excellent written and verbal communication.
Ability to interact effectively and
professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education,
racial, ethnic and professional backgrounds; work effectively with managers,
co-workers, members of the public and professional groups; manage and
coordinate activities and projects; communicate effectively, clearly, concisely

responsibilities.
High School diploma or equivalent
Successful completion of an approved Emergency
Medical Technician course. Preference will be given to previous work
experience as an Emergency Medical Technician.
Current CPR, valid
Successful completion of pre-employment written
exam, physical agility test, and drug screening.
Physical activities include climbing, balancing,
stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing,
pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive
motions. Physical demands include very heavy work while exerting in excess of
100 pounds of force occasionally; constantly to move objects; Visual
requirements include clarity of vision at twenty (20) feet or more, twenty (20)
inches or less, and at distances of more than twenty (20) inches and less than
twenty (20) feet; Ability to judge distance and space relationship, so as to
see objects where and as they actually are; Ability to frequently work under
varying noise levels, temperature extremes, mechanical hazards or equipment
hazards, exposure to dangerous chemicals,
solvents, fumes, radiation, exposure to burns or exposure to electrical shock,
and significant work pace/pressure during calls to injured patients. Ability to
identify and distinguish colors; Ability to observe an area up or down or left
or right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
