Medical Mission
In early November,
Ex-Officio board member Dr.Mark Guidry
joined a group of Houston area
healthcare workers and volunteers
on a medical mission to El Salvador.
Hundreds of persons were seen
for healthcare, surgery, vision
screening, etc. Many patients
had parasitic diseases and many
had chronic diseases such as arthritis
from years of labor on farms and
also diabetes. Dr. Guidry was
struck by the fact that in spite
of poverty, the people were most
generous and appreciative. He
noted a greater personal appreciation
for things we often take for granted
in our country - a ready supply
of safe water and nutritional
foods, the presence of sewage
systems, adequate shelter/housing,
and a capability for basic human
hygiene.
Most of all, however,
he will remember the joy and excitement
in the faces of the children. |
