| According to the National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, asthma ranks among the most common chronic conditions in the United States. In 1995, 14.9 million persons were affected and there were over 1.5 million emergency department visits, 500,000 hospitalizations and over 5,500 deaths. Moreover, the prevalence of asthma has been increasing since the 1980's among all groups. Asthma is not a reportable condition and accurate numbers are not available for Galveston County, however UTMB ER records have shown a steep increase in the number of ER visits for asthma between 1994 and 1998 with 2,097 visits in 1994 and 3,472 in 1998. Asthma affects more children and African Americans, proportionately. |

We hope to provide you with some tools and links to make your jobs easier when dealing with Asthma in school children. We have surveyed school nurses from across the county and have listened to their concerns and needs. Please let us know if these pages are helpful or how they can be made more beneficial to you. This is a cooperative project of the Galveston County Coordinated Community Clinic (4C's Clinic ) and the Galveston County Health District Community Health Nursing Department. The 4C's Clinic is a JCAHO Accredited primary health care facility with sites located in Texas City & Galveston. The clinic has physicians and other providers who can diagnose and manage asthma in children and adults. |
